A Tenerife Boat Day: Charter, Fishing or Party Boat?

Three very different days out get sold under the same words. Which one you want depends less on budget than on who you are travelling with — here is how to tell them apart before you book.

Almost everyone who visits southern Tenerife ends up on a boat at some point. The trouble is that “boat trip” covers at least three completely different days out, and people routinely book the wrong one.

Here is the honest version of each.

The private charter

You hire the boat and the skipper. Where you go, how long you stop, whether you swim, whether music is playing — all yours.

The thing people underestimate is how much difference this makes with a group. On a shared boat you are on somebody else's schedule and somebody else's playlist. On a private charter you can anchor in a bay because you liked the look of it.

The economics also surprise people. A charter is priced per boat, not per person, so the cost per head falls sharply as the group grows. For two people it is a splurge. For six, it is often comparable to six tickets on a shared trip — with none of the compromises.

Best for: groups, families, anyone celebrating something, anyone who wants to swim somewhere quiet.

The fishing trip

An entirely different proposition. The water off this coast drops away very steeply very close to shore, which is why serious deep-sea species are reachable within a short run from the marina.

Sport fishing is a committed day. You will be out for hours, often with long quiet stretches. If somebody in your party is expecting a scenic cruise with a drink in hand, they will be bored within the first hour.

Best for: people who actually want to fish. Not a compromise activity for a mixed group.

The party boat

Loud, sociable, and completely unapologetic about it. The Utopia boat party is the best-known one on this coast: music, a crowd, swimming stops, and a decidedly adult atmosphere.

It is a genuinely good day out if that is what you came for. It is a miserable one if you were imagining a peaceful sail. Read the description, then read it again.

Best for: groups in their twenties and thirties, stag and hen parties, anyone whose holiday has a soundtrack.

Choosing between them

  • Travelling with children or older relatives? Private charter, morning slot.
  • Two of you, want the experience without the charter price? A shared whale and dolphin trip, or a jet ski hour instead.
  • Group of six or more? Price a private charter before assuming it is out of reach.
  • Here to celebrate loudly? Party boat, and book early — they sell out.

Three things worth knowing whatever you pick

  1. Mornings are calmer. The wind builds through the afternoon along this coast. If anyone in your party is a nervous sailor, take the early slot.
  2. Wildlife is likely, not guaranteed. Resident pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins live in the channel between here and La Gomera year round, and sightings are common — but any operator promising a guarantee is overselling it.
  3. You will burn. Reflected light off water plus a cooling sea breeze is the classic combination that catches people out. Reapply more often than feels necessary.
